Leadership Team

Elders

John Winter

John is a teacher.  He takes the main teaching role at Whitby Christian Fellowship and has a great passion for deepening his own and others understanding of the word of God through preaching and teaching.

Ian Hobbs

Ian has been married to Jean for 51 years.  They have one daughter and two grandchildren who also live in Whitby.  They moved to Whitby from Isleham, a small village of 2000 and from a vibrant, Bible believing church of 300. They believe they have been sent to Whitby and more specifically to Whitby Christian Fellowship through God's leading.

Mike Fitton

Mike is the chairman of the Christian Motorcyclists' Association (UK) (CMA) and as such spends much of his time travelling to motorcycle meetings around the world.  He is married to Sandy and they live in Castleton in the Esk Valley.

Deacons

Allan Foster

Allan is married to Deidre and they have two grown-up children, Jon and Lisa.  Allan is responsible for practical matters within church life such as setting up the hall for our Sunday meetings.

Jack Barber

Jack is generally responsible for administrative tasks and technology within the church.  He's married to Megan and they have two children, Edmund and Florence, aged 2 and 7 months.  They live in Whitby.

Carole Elliott

Carole is responsible for pastoral matters, ensuring that church members' practical and spiritual needs are met.

Susan Taylor

Susan is married to Chris, our treasurer.  They live in Aislaby.  Susan takes responsibility for various tasks such as our church address book.

What is an Elder?

At Whitby Christian Fellowship we follow the New Testament model of Elders and Deacons as positions of leadership within the church.  An Elder is an elected member of the church, chosen to be responsible for spiritual matters within the church including teaching and prayer.  At Whitby Christian Fellowship we have three elders (John, Ian and Mike) who all share this responsibility.

What is a Deacon?

A Deacon is an elected member of the church who is chosen to be responsible for practical matters within the church.  A Deacon's role might include managing the practicalities of weekly meetings, ensuring that other church members' needs are met and are generally responsible for organising and running church events.  We have 4 Deacons, each with different skills, who are suited to different areas of this role including spiritual counselling, practical help, administration and technology.

Statement of Faith

  1. The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  2. The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
  3. The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God—fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
  4. The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
  5. The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
  6. The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.
  7. The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world.
  8. The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
  9. The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.
  10. The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
  11. The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.

Evangelical Alliance

Whitby Christian Fellowship is a member of the Evangelical Alliance which was founded in 1846 and is the oldest alliance of evangelical Christians in the world.

The Alliance is the largest body serving evangelical Christians in the UK, and has a membership including denominations, churches, organisations and individuals. In its formative years the Alliance particularly stood for the victims of religious persecution and enabled evangelicals from different denominations to work together.
